Scientists Complete the Periodic Table
Scientists Complete the Periodic Table à The periodic table as we know it is now complete! The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) has announced verification of the only elements left elements 113, 115, 117, and 118. These elements complete the 7th and final row of the periodic table of elements. Of course, if elements with higher atomic numbers are discovered, then an additional row will be added to the table. Details on the Discoveries of the Last Four Elements The fourth IUPAC/IUPAP Joint Working Party (JWP) reviewed literature to determine claims for verification of these last few elements have fulfilled all the criteria necessary to officially discover the elements. What this means is the discovery of the elements has been replicated and demonstrated to the satisfaction of scientists according to the 1991 discovery criteria decided by the IUPAP/IUPAC Transfermium Working Group (TWG). The discoveries are credited to Japan, Russia, and the USA. These groups will be allowed to propose the names and symbols for the elements, which will need to be approved before the elements take their place on the periodic table. Element 113 Discovery Element 113 has the temporary working name ununtrium, with symbol Uut. The RIKEN team in Japan has been credited with discovering this element. Many people hope Japan will choose a name like japonium for this element, with symbol J or Jp, since J is the one letter presently absent from the periodic table. Elements 115, 117, and 118 Discovery Elements 115 (ununpentium, Uup) and 117 (ununseptium, Uus) were discovered by a collaboration between Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Oak Ridge, TN, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California, and the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna, Russia. Researchers from these groups will propose new names and symbols for these elements. Element 118 (ununoctium, Uuo) discovery is creditedà to a collaboration between the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna, Russia and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California. This group has discovered several elements, so theyre sure to have a challenge ahead of them coming up with new names and symbols. Why Its So Hard To Discover New Elements While scientists may be able to make new elements, its difficult to prove the discovery because these superheavy nuclei decay into lighter elements instantaneously. Proof of the elements requires demonstration that the set of daughter nuclei that are observed can be unequivocally attributed to the heavy, new element. It would be much simpler if it was possible to directly detect and measure the new element, but this hasnt been possible. How Long Until We See New Names? Once the researchers propose new names, the Inorganic Chemistry Division of the IUPAC will check them to make sure they dont translate into something funky in other language or have some prior historic use that would make them unsuitable for an element name. A new element may be named for a place, country, scientist, property, or mythological reference. The symbol needs to be one or two letters. After the Inorganic Chemistry Division checks the elements and symbols, they are presented for public review for five months. Most people start using the new element names and symbols at this point, but they dont become official until the IUPAC Council formally approves them. At this point, the IUPAC will change their periodic table (and others will follow suit).

Abortion Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words - 8
Abortion - Essay Example Using abortion as a tool of gender selection is immoral from the point of view of Western cultures which support diversity and gender equality. India is not the only place where people are ready to do everything to have a boy; in China the situation is close to this. As far as gender inequality is a local cultural tradition, many years should pass before anything changes. This tradition is not only discriminatory; it is also harmful for demographical situation in the country because the number of men in the country significantly exceeds women. Knowing that a child will suffer from incurable mental or physical condition after birth, I will think twice depending on my ability to care about such a special child. I cannot give a definite answer in the case because this decision depends on many factors. Some of mental and physical condition can be cured and some are not. Special children require more attention and special treatment, so I would consider whether I can provide all these things to support and develop a child with special needs before making the final

Reflective Questions Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words
Reflective Questions - Essay Example how to use the camera in a professional way, how to film from different angle, how to avoid the camera shaking, how the lighting is important in the film process Etc. I enhanced this skill when we initialized our project and we put the outline, then we made the plan which we going to stick on, we organized the work and we divided the parts between our team members then we start doing our project based on that. We discovered later on that we should use just one voice instead of two voices in the narration because our subject was about sentence fluency. Moreover, when we divide our 10 min video after we found out that it would infects the audience bored. Honestly, I was not sure about our project subject (sentence fluency) in the beginning. You required an instructional video and this subject was teaching a grammar. Letter on I found that convert this subject to instructional video would be a challenge for me. Therefore, I decided to learn about sentence fluency and I face many problems because I am international student. I tried to beat this, I give all I have to present my work in great way, and I hope that what I did. My ability to persuasion other people improved. Once we were filming six volunteers and after we done we found that the camera was shaking. So I went to the writing center and I persuaded the 6 volunteers to re-film them again and I did that by show them the importance of the work we do and the importance of their role for the completion of this work. They agree and I did the re-filming process alone again. In addition, I persuaded ESL students to be filmed by explaining to them sentence fluency meaning and give them some advices so they can improve their writing skill. They agree and it was great experience and I am sure that my ability to communicate and persuasion others improved. How many hours have you spent on your project? Were there times when you worked long hours without noticing the passing of time? Give a number

Mind-Body Problem Summary Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Mind-Body Problem Summary - Essay Example Descartes discussed mind-body issue in the different dimension that came to be known as dualism in the philosophical arena. The approach of ââ¬Ëmechanical philosophyââ¬â¢ began emerging during the 17th century that was based on the premise that objects interact through direct contact; however, Descartes tended to emphasize that language did not lie within the realms of mechanism. For him, thought process was a separate entity distinct from the physical body. Newton argued that planetary and terrestrial motion in the universe did not follow the mechanical philosophy. He essentially wanted to convey that anti-materialist things did exist in this universe. Newtons assertion of mysterious force, curved space, electrical force goes beyond the concept of body or matter entirely. While quantum theory in physics and chemical bonding in chemistry helps explaining a unified universe, does this mean that mind/brain as a unified object can best explain the language and mind phenomena in humans? Many attempts to reduce mental properties to neural network phenomena; however, that lead to several serious questions. Considerable efforts have been made to show that mind is nothing but matter, and language thought processes are properties of brain. It is the neurophysiological activities of brain that causes mental phenomena. Naturalism or materialism, as a theory, got resurgence in the 1960s attempting to establish the belief that mental state was, in no way, different than physical entities. That is to say matter is as compatible with thought and sensation as with attraction and repulsion. Organized system of matter known as brain eventually lead to perception and thought process. In a way, emergence of thoughts in humans is all through nervous system of brain. Brain acts as a mechanism to create thoughts in humans. While Newton did expose the imperfectness of the mechanical philosophy, his

Right to Counsel Essay Example for Free
Right to Counsel Essay 1)à à The right to counsel as guaranteed by the Sixth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution refers to the right of the accused to have the court appoint an attorney for him for his defense at the critical stages of criminal proceedings (Wests Encyclopedia of American Law, 1998). These crucial stages are arraignment, trial, custodial interrogation, police line-up after charges have been filed, sentencing and until appeal of a judgment of conviction (Wests Encyclopedia of American Law). The Right to Counsel Clause of the Constitution attaches during custodial interrogation when law enforcement officers deprive the accused of his freedom and thereafter subjects him to questioning. The right to counsel has some bearing with the due process clause especially in the case where the accused is charged with an offense punishable with death penalty. In this case, the court must appoint a competent counsel for the defense of an indigent accused (Wests Encyclopedia of American Law). 2)à à à The U.S. Supreme Court laid down the standards for law enforcement officers during custodial investigations in the case of Miranda v. Arizona, 384 U.S. 436. According to the Court, the suspect ââ¬Å"must be warned that they have the right to remain silent; that any statements they make may be used as evidence against them; that they have the right to an attorney; and that if they cannot afford an attorney, one will be appointed for them prior to any questioning if they so desireâ⬠(Miranda v. Arizona, 384 U.S. 436).à Any evidence obtained in violation of these principles shall not be admissible in court in accordance with the exclusionary rule. This being so, the evidence cannot be used against the accused (Wests Encyclopedia of American Law). Waiver of the Miranda rights must be made knowingly and intelligently and should the suspect invoke his right to counsel to be present during the interrogation, the police officers must cease the questioning.

Multiple Universes Essay -- Astronomy Research Science Essays
Multiple Universes For the sake of characters, I will assume that everyone understands, or at least partly understands, the grave obscurity in which quantum mechanics revolves. In essence, like light, electrons are attributable to the qualities of waves in which they exhibit a type of diffraction pattern caused by the electrons interfering with each other, therefore, positing that matter, at least microscopically, acts as a wave (1). Hence, it seems as though electrons do not follow a static pattern, but interact with the world dynamically in a more probabilistic manner. With a probabilistic view of the world there leaves room for the chance of other possible outcomes within our world that could happen, allowing for a realistic possibility of other worlds concurrently occurring. Hugh Everett III was the first to publish a theory on the concept of particle wave simultaneity leading to the possibility of multiple universes resulting from every possible particle event creating a new world (2). Everett, then, could solve the problem of Schrodingerââ¬â¢s cat allowing for the fact that the cat lived and died but in different universesââ¬âbroadening the idea of superposition. David Deutsch has brought a realistââ¬â¢s point of view to the Multiple Worlds Interpretation (MWI), explaining that there is a tangible self (the self that we see) and a shadow self (the self that splits off), and that the interference created during the double slit experiment happens from the shadow and tangible passing through the different slits. Multiverses, however, offshoot from the MWI and posit that each quantum fluctuation creates a brand new big bang, explaining how itââ¬â¢s possible for our world to have had the six numbers perfe... .... But the likelihood of such events is slim, since it is far more likely that Earth will be destroyed before we are able to consider such travel. So in conclusion, multiverses are quite exciting and intriguingââ¬ânot only to scientists, but to laymen; one need only glance at popular culture to see we as a people are fascinated with the possibilities. But in reality, the science and reality of multiverses is far from concrete; so until we are able to gain more knowledge, we will have to be content with our dreams. The Success Of Michael Crichtons Novels In The Media Industry :: essays research papers
The Success of Michael Crichton's Novels in the Media Industry à à à à à One only has to look at the astonishing opening weekend of Paramount Pictures' action adventure thriller Congo which was universally panned by critics, to be reminded of the power of the person who created the underlying material: Jurassic Park author Michael Crichton. The film's whopping $24.6 million opening, which shocked insiders, underscored the value to Hollywood of an exclusive club of best-selling writers (Eller 3). à à à à à Michael Chrichton's novels all have their similarities. He seems to follow a pattern which is working very well for him. He picks a hot-button subject and uses it to lend his novels a glossy veneer of topicality. He casts his novels with some really detestable villains so attentive readers will automatically know who to root for. He ends each chapter on a scary, cliff- hanging note to make sure that readers will keep reading, regardless of the characters vapidity. He includes many frantic chase scenes or race-against-the- clock scenes that will translate graphically onto the screen. He puts plenty of technical, pseudo-specialist talk into his characters' mouths to give readers the illusion that they're learning something as they quickly flip the pages (Kakutui 3). à à à à à Michael Crichton has definitely made a boom in the entertainment industry. Whether it is his top grossing movies or his top rated television shows like E.R. which took a leading twenty prime-time Emmy nominations last year including best drama (Carter 23). à à à à à Crichton's latest movie Congo, which had a great opening weekend, was one of his successes. This movie was based on a book that Crichton wrote in the early 80's, long before he became the entertainment powerhouse that he is now. Chrichton's novels seem to be written for big screen translations (Brom 14). Publishers say that they can't recall a time since Jaws and The Exorcist, two decades ago, when movies gave such a boost to the books that inspired them (Romney 5). Michael Chrichton indefinitely tops this long list of authors. à à à à à Crichton's novels cover many subjects such as genetic engineering in Jurassic Park, sexual harassment in Disclosure, or Japan's threat to America in Rising Sun (Denby 12). I think that it is this wide variety of subject matter that keeps his readers coming back for more. à à à à à Crichton's biggest success by far was the novel Jurassic Park. This book made a sales record in both the novel and on the screen (Turan 11). It ended up grossing over $913 million total in ticket sales and holds the privilege of being the top selling live action movie ever on home video (Wall Street Journal B5). It was such a success that its director, Steven Spielberg,
